The Web site design starts with an analysis of your needs. you could start with a Business Analyst then pass the results to a Web Architect or go direct to the Web Architect. The Web Architect can help you select the best approach to building and maintaining your Web site using the level of involvement most useful to you or your budget.

There are all sorts of "magic" software and Web sites out there that promise instant Web sites without work. You end up with an expensive useless Web site that attracts nobody and cannot be expanded as far as you need. You then throw away the "magic" Web site and start again. Or, you can skip the "magic" approach and build a Web site that will do what you want for as long as you want. A well built Web site costs a little bit more time and money than the "magic" Web site but by the end of the first year, the well build site saves you far more time and the site will work.

Web Designers equate to Interior Decorators for houses. You get a Web site designer to layout a sample content page that can be used to set a up a template for your Web site. Designers of conventional print material are quick to claim they are Web site designers and you can often pick the results from all the simple errors made by the designers. Web site design takes as much training and experience as conventional print design, it is not something you can pick up on a half day training course.

Look for Web developers with five years experience and most of that experience in the type of site you want and using the tools recommended by the Web Architect. Ensure the workers live in the same country as you so that they are subject to the same laws as you. You have absolutely no way of getting your money back if the contractor is from overseas and can disappear the instant they cash your cheque.

If your site requires a team of workers then you can mix locals with visiting contractors. Make sure that everyone who touches customer data is local and everyone who has a password to access your system is local. The visiting contractors can work on their own notebook computers using models of the Web site, all done without accessing your Web site, your computers, or your network.
